The use of artificial intelligence (AI) will have far-reaching effects on work in production, services, mobility and education. In order to understand and utilize these effects, the introduction of AI applications must be examined holistically. The aim of the KARL competence center as an interdisciplinary and regional research network is to design and test human-centered, transparent and learning-promoting AI-supported systems and implement them in demonstrators. Five design fields in four different application domains are considered holistically.

KARL will be designed as a virtual hub of attractive real-world laboratories, virtual worlds and showcase solutions from practice partners. To this end, real places for experiencing, trying out and learning will be networked and represented via the online platform. A central contact point will be set up to provide interested stakeholders with low-threshold access to the showcase solutions developed.

The focus of the ifab is to design AI-supported work systems that are technically functional, economically efficient and humane. To this end, the ifab deals with the question of the acceptance of AI for work and develops and reviews rules for the ergonomic design of work with AI.

The KARL research project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the "Innovations for the production, services and work of tomorrow" program.
